do you have a morning ritual/routine?

Thursday, July 26, 2012

I recently read a book that talks a lot about the importance of having a daily rhythm, something steady yet flexible to guide you through your days. Having a morning routine was particularly emphasised; the author even said that her mornings seem a little bit like groundhog day!

I wrote a while back about not checking my phone first thing in the morning. It's still a work in progress, but I'd like to take it a step further. I'd like a morning routine/ritual. Now, if you've been reading my blog for a while you'll know that I am not a morning person, which I've decided is even more reason for me to focus on starting the day off right.

I'm kind of thinking out loud here, but here is how I'd like my mornings to go (roughly).
  • wake up between 7 and 8 am
  • NO phone checking
  • have a cup of hot water with lemon as I make breakfast
  • eat breakfast and drink tea
  • shower, wash face, brush teeth
  • get dressed (hair and wee bit of makeup as well)
  • tidy and then, and only then, start work
Ideally I'd like to include a short meditation and maybe even some yoga, but for now, I'll keep it simple. They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit, so here goes...

Do you have a morning routine? Or are you more of a rush out the door with a coffee in one hand and a piece of toast in the other? (No judgement, this was me, last week).

  1. I do most of these too. =) But recently my wake up time has been between 9 and 10 am. Lucky to be working late.

  2. I am neither a morning person and that's something I want to change, sometimes I even feel I had loose a lot of time thinking 'What do I do now?' and other days I just have time to rush with a cup of cold coffee (cause I hadn't hot the milk!). Sometimes I complain about this, I hate to have the feeling of wasted time.
So... maybe it is a good idea to start TRYING to make my own morning routine... If I succeed I'll tell you :)

PS. Do you recommend that book?

  3. I do have a morning routine thanks to having a baby! He wakes up at 730 on the dot. I feed him, we play a bit while watching Dog the Bounty hunter and then go back to bed at 9 for an hour and a half or so.

  4. My mornings are a bit all over the place as I sometimes work at night. But I have just started to try to drink a cup of hot water with lemon and a bit of honey first thing, before I go for my shower. It makes me feel good, much better than the regular tea I used to drink every morning.

  7. Unfortunately my morning routine is to instantly get out my phone, check messages, read old tweets, etc. I need to stop doing that!

  11. Cool post. My morning routine definitely involves sipping warm water w/lemon and a pinch of cayenne. I just like the spicy kick!

  12. My mornings revolve around my two young pups. We get up early, go for a walk, eat breakfast, then play in the yard. Then, it's off to work I go.... If I can sneak a cup of tea in there, then that's pretty much a perfect morning to me :)

  14. I definitely need to sort myself out with a morning routine or it drifts away from me--I often don't get dressed until I have to leave the house, or forget to have breakfast... x

  15. No routine but I've decide to flat out plagiarize your (new) morning routine. Even though I despise waking up with all my heart, on the rare occasion I'm up, I love it. It makes me feel like anything is possible.

  16. My mornings are pretty rushed. I have to get my kids packed for school and get them dressed. Adds a bit of chaos, but it's all good. I love putting special surprises in their lunches. :) After dropping them off I make myself a cappuccino and check my emails. It's my quiet time and I cherish it so much.

  17. in florida, in vacation mode, i usually get woken up at 6:30 am by the puppies. one will usually sit on my head. and then i sleep til 8 or 9 or so, decaf coffee, bagel, and then some writing. in boston, a flurry of homework with the stuffing of breakfast in my mouth as i bust out a paper or two. :)

  18. i'm a morning person and seem to be most productive during the early hours. my mon-fri morning routine is the same every day. i like to take my time and not be stressed out before i even get to work. on the weekends i still like to get up early, get everything done right away and then enjoy the rest of the day. i've always been like that and it has been working fine thus far :) best of luck with the new routine!

  20. Great post, Gaby!

I am terrible at maintaining a morning routine...well, a routine that is productive.

I'm usually up around 7.30/8 (unless I have an early start at work), watch the morning news for an hour or so, feed the animals, check emails/blogs/social networks, hurriedly chuck on some clothes and run out the door to work/uni/errands. Breakfast doesn't usually happen unless we go out to a cafe (bad, I know!) otherwise it's coffee to tide me over until lunchtime.
I'm really craving some sort of routine that encourages me to make the most of my time.

Sam and I have started walking the dog at dusk; we get to chat about our days and the dog gets her exercise. So far, 2 days down, 19 to go! I'll let you know how we go...And all the best with your new routine! :D

  21. Hello!
Oh my, I cannot wait until Fall and snuggling in sweaters!

  22. It always depends on the time of year for me!! Because I've just started uni, I'm sort of laying down a routine. Muesli, yoghurt & fresh fruit with a cup of hot water & lemon as well (how good is hot water & freshly squeezed lemon juice!?), washing my face, brushing my teeth and making sure my hair looks semi-presentable, deliberately picking out clothes that I'll feel good in and then leaving time to talk to the bus without getting stressed about missing it.

I can almost guarantee that by the time mid-sem exams and assignment due dates start rolling around though that I will be rushing out of the house doing up the last few buttons of a shirt, or wrapping a scarf around my neck with a banana in hand :P

I am hoping to surprise myself though and keep up the first routine!

    Good luck!! Rhi xx

  23. I cherish my morning routine supremely! I get my Starbucks (nasty habit that I dream of quitting!) and journal/pray/meditate on the bench on my back porch (weather permitting)... It is my happy place!
