do you call your partner 'baby'?

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

My husband calls me Chica, and I call him Chico. I can't remember when it started, but one day he just began calling me Chica (because I'm half Colombian) and it stuck. Those of you who speak Spanish will know that it means 'girl' - thereby making it a completely nonsensical nickname, but there you have it.

Other than that, we call each other by our names. Never babe, baby, honey, sweetheart, darling, pumpkin etc... It's just not how we roll. But lately I'm starting to think that we are, perhaps, the only couple on the planet who don't call each other 'baby.' Am I right? What do you call your significant other?

  1. Hm well maybe ;) We fall into the baby/honey group but now you have me thinking that we should be more creative (all the imaginative nicknames seem to have gone to our cat!).

  2. When Sam and I started dating we had talked about how much we disliked pet names for partners, and we'd jokingly call each other 'baby' to annoy our housemates but then it stuck! It's a kind of an in-joke for us.
I call Sam 'mi chica' (because of my Spanish heritage).
I guess these names are personal to us (I couldn't call my partner darling or honey or pumpkin without laughing or cringing)

  6. I like your unique nicknames! My husband and I have a looong list of ridiculous nicknames we have for each other: babe, baby, honey, sugar, sug (shortened from sugar), pumpkin, boo, boo boo bear (gag right?) aaand even stranger, I like to call my husband random names like Charlie and Johnny. I don't even understand it myself.

  7. Just had an inner debate as to whether I should post this or not.

My partner has uruguayan heritage, so our nickname is a little joke translation of how his aunt and uncle call each other culito.

So we call each other bum. As in "Hey bum, how was your day?". Yep, bum. (That looks so bad written and it sounds even worse when you say it in front of your grandma). I think it is time for a new nickname. I wonder if I can adopt your chico/chica? Sounds much more loving.

We've never called each other baby.

  8. We don't really do baby either- but we do have TONS of nicknames, and as far as I'm concerned, the more ridiculous the better. My recent favorite for Brian is "Boobear." (I know, it's vomit-inducing, but it makes me laugh and more importantly, it's a habit that is kinda hard to break at this point)

  9. for some reason "baby" kind of creeps me out which is odd because we do call each other "babe". somehow reminds me less of infants...

when i message Greg and call him lamb chop but i wouldn't say it in front of anyone else! he calls me duck, which I hated at first but it has stuck.

how often do these things start as jokes and just stick- seems to be the theme here!

  11. My husband Robert and I call each other "love" (which i picked up from the pirates of the Caribbean but I'm not sure he knows that). Every once in a while he calls me something special like doll, or babe - but my current favorite is "rib" tehe - Kami from TheBlueKazoo

  12. I get all the classic spanish lovey dovey blatherings... like amor, hermosura, mi vida... At first I though it was awkward but I've learned to love and expect it. Me on the other hand? I call him ridiculous things that make me laugh... like penguinito. I'm too 100% cold blooded north european to say the more romantic stuff without giggling. And I'd feel like a fool saying baby (or bebe haha) in particular. Except to an actual baby.

  13. my parents were big into nick names even when i was younger and my name is reserved for when i'm in trouble, so if my partner calls me by my first name i usually feel like i'm in trouble or something serious is about to happen. hahaha!

  14. We have a million nicknames, and most are just jokes. But, oddly enough...we do all it each other baby. That's weird to me and I never thought I'd be that person...but I do it! :)

  15. I started calling my man Babe about halfway through our relationship. It was SUPER awkward at first because it doesn't really suit him and because I had used that term for a previous boyfriend; so I didn't really say it much to start.
Now we've been together so long that it's just him. It means that I LOVE him and he's like my beau or whatever. Haha.
I'd love to come up with something else but I figure we have plenty of time for more endearments. ;)

  16. haha we used to. first it was honey. then baby. then babe. and now its just "ken and kim"

  17. my boyfriend and i use baby/honey a lot (plus all the other ones). he also speaks french, so i get "ma cherie" quite a lot. i like that one.

but we're weird and have actual "pet" names for each other. i call him turtle, and he calls me guppy. it's so weird--it started as a joke but has stuck haha....

  19. no, we don't call each other baby, but we have equally annoying and embarrassing nicknames. luvs, hanza (for honey), monkeybutt, etc. we come up with random things quite often. we tend to forget them a few days later though. i didn't really think that we'll be one of those couples, but it just happened somehow.

  20. Even though you already know this, Gaby, I thought I'd share. Alanna and I call each other baaaaabe all the time! But other than that, it's often "Lover", because we were so on-again, off-again at the beginning of our relationship, and it's stuck. There was also a point where I tried to stop myself calling her honey because it wasn't vegan (!!!), so I tried Agave, Sweet Freedom... but somehow it's still honey, even though we're still vegan.

  21. Aaron and I like to call each other all sorts of ridiculous names including baby, love, baby-love, etc. haha but my favourite is "Doodle-bug." Sometimes we even sign off emails or texts to each other "DB" :)

  22. I remember telling my husband before we got married that I thought it was really weird and unattractive to be called "baby" or "babe". sometimes he calls me "lover-dove" or "darlin". I guess we're more playful than serious with "pet names".

  23. I call him a bunch of cheesy names with the sole purpose of trying to find a cheesier name than I've already been using and seeing if I can get a reaction out of him.

  24. a myriad of names but "baby" does come out from time to time.

  25. I call him handsome - I love his smile! He calls me babe - but now I find myself doing this too.

  26. i'm not a 'baby' person either, ha...i think we just use love.

  27. We don't really use baby or babe either. We have goofy nicknames for either other based on our names. I call him Ruby (his name is Ryan) and he calls me Siracha (my name is Sara). A lot of times they're shorted to Rube and Rach. So weird, but totally us.

  28. i think that's the cutest thing i've ever heard.

  29. it's babe here. i know were boring. for the boys it's "boo" for the older one and "booboo" for the little one.

  30. You're right: a lot of people call their significant others "babe" or "baby". I call mine "hunny bunny" which might be cheesy. I think it's cute he calls you "chica". Such a cute post! -Jessica L

  31. the fiance and i don't call each other baby or babe. it's just not what we do, and quite frankly we don't like that nickname. so the farther we stay away from it, the better it is. haha
