well maybe the table didn't want to go to ikea

Have you seen the episode of 30 Rock where Liz and her boyfriend go to Ikea on Valentine's Day? It gets me every time. All the couples there are bickering and breaking up. My favourite is the couple using the furniture as a metaphor for their relationship: "Well I think the table needs to stop listening to its mother." Ha.

There's just something about the Swedish megastore that leads to mega meltdowns. Nevertheless, husband declared last week be-nice-to-chica-week, so I dragged brought him to Ikea with me. And we spent the whole time referring to each other as 'the table' and 'the chair.' But we also had lunch first (definitely helps meltdown avoidance) and got in and out nice and quick, with a whole bunch of new fabric for me :)

Do you and your spouse fight at Ikea?

  1. We went to Ikea this weekend, it was my first time ever and I was spellbound! We fought a little, mostly over what our dream kitchen would be once looking at what Ikea had to offer. Thankfully we came to a rather pleasing compromise!

  2. My fiance got in trouble for not paying attention when I was trying to find us a rug. To be fair we were about 70% of the way in and the screaming children trapped in the cattle-run style "path" were getting to me too.

As a thank you I took him to the $2 shop and bought him a pirate set- eye patch and gold earing. He loved being a pirate all the way home- easily satisfied!!

  5. Lol. Ikea is a dangerous, dangerous place. Strangely my last trip there didn't lead to a meltdown, but normally it does, whether it is me or Rodge or the toddler.

  6. We live about 5 minutes from the Tempe store so are always popping in. I think because of the track like setup, we feel a bit like we are in a race. So they is no time to bicker we are to busy running

  8. Wow! I've never heard of it that- 'All couples are bickering and breaking up in Ikea' *lol* Anyway, I love IKEA and hubby does too. We just went to IKEA last weekend. Hmmm, surprisingly, we are always on the same understanding, mutually- regarding furniture there. Well, I guess ours are really rare case *lol*

  11. Well actually Stu and I have never been to Ikea together. Ha! Is it the new big Ikea you went there? I think it'd be so much fun to play hide and seek in Ikea.

  14. This is too funny, because in our early years of marriage, yes, EVERY time we went to IKEA, inevitably we would come out ignoring each other due we had fought somewhere inside the megastore. Eventually, after a number of years, we learnt that the best way to navigate IKEA was for us to decide beforehand what we were planning to buy and what we would be looking at (though not necessarily buying). This would stop Rick from stressing out that I was buying everything under the roof, and I could stop stressing out that Rick was stressing out.

  17. Ha, funny coincidence I read that post today. Usually, I planned on going to Ikea with my boyfriend tonight, but yesterday he kinda confessed to me that he thinks Ikea is boring and he absolutely doesn't want to go... Tho I'm a bit disappointed, I need to look on it from the bright side: I save money and we'll also save us a fight. :)

    Thanks for sharing.
    xoxo. Happy weekend.

  18. This is so funny! I have never seen that episode of 30 Rock, but I think I have to watch it right away! My husband and I just had a disastrous trip to Ikea
(here). If only we didn't move so often; maybe we wouldn't hate going there so much :)

    P.S. Love your blog!

  20. Hubby and I call Ikea 'The Relationship Tester'. If you want to know if your relationship will survive the test of time see how you go after spending an hour in Ikea.

More than one of my friends has broken up in that place.

Will have to watch that episode of 30 Rock!

  21. My husband and I have a massive fight everytime we go there - luckily we live in Tasmania and there is not one in our state so the fights are restricted to maybe once a year or something lol
