44/52 and 45/52

"A portrait of my child, once a week, every week, in 2013."

44/52: She doesn't love food, but she does love leaves. And sticks. Yum.

45/52: Relaxing on a hot day.

You may have noticed that I took the last week off blogging. The truth is that this past week has been one of the hardest weeks yet for me as a mom. Over the last month Clementine has gone from waking up for 2 quick feeds a night to waking up 4 times on a good night. And you don't even want to know what a bad night looks like. My husband and I are exhausted, overwhelmed and wondering what to do. Even Clementine is suffering, and I know that sleep is what we all need. We still don't know what to do, but I hope a change for the better comes soon.

  1. Oh Gaby I feel for you so. I know advice will come from everywhere, and it is a mixed blessing, but I will offer my own piece of experience. When mine were babies someone once said to me " sleep begets sleep". I realised that I was trying to keep them awake at certain times in the hope they would sleep better at night. I did find that the more they slept during the day the more they started to sleep at night. Please take or disregard this as is appropriate for you, I know all mums, dads and babies are different, but I do hope things get better for you all, I know how long those nights can feel xx

  2. Oh Gaby, I've been trying to think of something encouraging to write, but with a babe who woke every hour and a half last night, my brain refuses to comply. It's so frustrating knowing that all you need is sleep, but it seems like an impossible task these days. I've been struggling to stop wishing the years away until I have a big boy who is happy to sleep a full night. I guess all the comfort I can provide is that you're not alone, sister, and you're doing so great xx

  3. Good luck. We finally started getting some sleep after a long 9 months with Eloise for her to wake up 4 times a night for the past three! Definitely exhausting.

  4. Gaby, wishing you guys the best of luck with this. My own sleep has been non-existent as of late (for different reasons) but I can sympathize with how awfully draining and exhausting it can be!! I've been surviving on 2-3 hours for the past month and feel awful! Hope you guys find a good little groove soon and get the much needed rest you need!!

  5. Oh Gaby, it's SO HARD. But I hate to say it .... quite normal. Just hang in there, because I can PROMISE you, it will get better. It will. Lots of love xxxx

  6. Thinking of you Gaby - being a mama is tough... Fingers crossed for some sleep soon x

  7. Hi Gaby
I feel for you. I have been there (twice) and the experience of lack of sleep is unparalleled. Be confident that it will get better, because it most definitely does, and in the interim be as kind to yourself as possible. Pay as much attention to yourself and your beautiful girl as you can and you will figure it out. Or time will pass and you will find yourself in a much more comfortable stage. If you are worried though, or if things aren't sitting right (about anything), speak to your community health nurse, or GP, or trusted professional. And get your thyroid checked. It can do funny things post pregnancy which can have a surprising (negative) impact.
    Much love

    1. Thank you so much Liz. I really appreciate your comment (and your advice!). I'd never thought to check my thyroid x

  8. Gaby, I've been thinking about you a lot lately after seeing your instagram post a while back. You and I are in the same boat -- if anything else, take comfort in knowing that you are not alone! A friend offered me the simplest advice early in my pregnancy -- everything is temporary and this too shall pass. I try to remember that after being woken at 2, 3, 4 a.m. Hope Clementine is getting a little more sleep (you too!)

I love hearing from you, and if you ask me a question I'll answer you here (or by email if your email is linked to your profile) x
