My creative space: vital organs

Thursday, April 7, 2011

I made this bag for one of my besties, Vanessa, for Christmas but I forgot to take a photo of it before I gave it away. Luckily, Ness just sent me this one, but it was taken with a computer so it's not the clearest shot. To make the bag, I used transfers from Sublime Stitching and then just sewed up a simple tote. I made it for her because she's in medical school, and I feel certain that my embroidered vital organs must be helping her studies...

Don't forget to head over to Kootoyoo for more creative spaces!

embroidering

oh deer

Since I talked about my love hate relationship with embroidery a couple of weeks ago, I thought I'd show you another embroidered project that I actually finished. I mentioned in that post that I learned how to embroider with a kit from Sublime Stitching, and this is the product of those early days of sitting on my couch with a needle in one hand and Jenny's embroidery instructions in the other. Once I had finished the embroidery, I just sewed a very simple tote bag. The stitches are a bit wonky (I'm not great at sewing on straps) and the embroidery is imperfect, but it's one of my favourite things that I've made. I carry it with me often, and I usually get compliments on the pretty deer. When that happens, as much as I'd love to pretend that I'm talented enough to draw said deer, I always fess up and explain about how great Sublime Stitching is. If you're into embroidery, or you just want to learn, definitely check them out. Or better yet, have a friend teach you. I think that's pretty much the best way to learn a new skill.

Seasonal coasters

4 seasons coasters

summer

I seem to have a love/hate relationship with embroidery. I taught myself to do it about a year ago with an embroidery kit from Sublime Stitching. But since then, I've only completed a few projects, and I still have a half finished embroidery hiding in my closet. I do enjoy the process, but it just takes sooooooo long! When I feel the itch to embroider, I think it's best to stick with something small, which is why when I saw these coasters that SouleMama made, I decided to make something similar. They didn't take me all that long, and they used up some little scraps. I just free-embroidered (can you even say that?) the tree shapes and then sewed a small scrap to the top, and then sewed that to the backing fabric leaving a hole to pull through. Then I whipstitched that hole shut, and done! Now I act all protective when husband tries to stick a glass onto them because he might pull out the French knots... But the coasters without French knots are totally useful, I swear.
