mother daughter style: fabrik

Saturday, December 6, 2014

Style is something I've been thinking about a lot these days. Every day I open my closet and I'm faced with that age-old dilemma: closet full of clothes, nothing to wear. Before having a baby, I spent my days wearing workout wear (to teach yoga), and dresses (to hang out). I didn't give much thought to breastfeeding friendly clothing when I was pregnant, so it came as a bit of a shock when I discovered that I couldn't wear about 80% of my wardrobe after giving birth. I couldn't feed in any of my dresses, so I started wearing nursing tanks and skirts. My other standby was a nursing tank under a t-shirt, worn with baggy shorts. I remember when my mom visited us right after Clementine's birth, and then again in March, she made fun of me for how often I wore the same few things.

After the first year, when Clementine stopped breastfeeding around the clock, more of my clothing became wearable again, but not as much as I had anticipated. The thing is, all of those pretty dresses? They're mostly too dressy for my everyday activities, which include grocery shopping, toddler wrangling and sitting in the park. And while I didn't mind sacrificing comfort for style before having a baby, now I cannot bear to wear anything tight, clingy or remotely uncomfortable.

Inspired by some wonderful minimalist style blogs (I love this one, this one and this one), I'm thinking of trying out a capsule wardrobe. It's basically what I do already; I'm just not that organised about it. Now that I'm motivated though, it's a whole different story. I'm planning, writing lists, thinking about exactly the kinds of clothes that I like to wear.

Fabrik recently sent me two pieces from their summer collection: the Shell T-shirt in black & white stripe and the bamboo column skirt. Both pass my personal comfort and versatility tests and will definitely be in my summer capsule. I've worn the skirt with the t-shirt tucked in, or knotted above the waist (as above), and even as a strapless dress with a cream lace top layered over it. And the t-shirt is just a really nice, comfy, practical top to have in my closet. Fabrik also kindly sent Clementine a couple of outfits, both of which are ridiculously cute. In the first two photos she's wearing the garden dress with the kitty shorts. In the other shots she's wearing the angel dress with bloomers similar to these. There's just something about a baby in bloomers!

summer dreaming

Friday, October 12, 2012

It's cold, wet and grey here today and some parts of the state have woken up to snow. Highly unusual for this time of year, to say the least. So while I spend the day inside drinking tea and reading my book, I'm dreaming of the perfect summer outfit. Here's mine:

1. Gorman Sunglasses. Love this shape and the great colours.
2. Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin. I just finished reading The Happiness Project and I figure this follow up book would be a terrific summer read.
3. Etsy camisole. Antique underwear makes for the perfect summer top.
4. Madewell shorts. Can't beat a pair of worn in denim shorts.
5. Gorman backpack. The one thing on this list that I'm coveting above all else - a fashionable mochila. There's a Colombian tribe called the Wayuu who are famous for making these beautiful bags. This one is right up my alley.
6. Tan Saltwaters. My favourite summer shoes.

sandals-and-skirts

My friend Aisha happens to be one of the most stylish people I know, and ever since she started her blog I've been harassing her to do outfit posts. It was harder to ignore me when I was standing there, in front of her, with a camera in hand. So we did it; we took photos of our outfits...

Necklace: House of Harlow, Top: Forever 21, Belt: Cherry Pick Vintage, Skirt: Urban Outfitters.

Top: Anthropologie, Jeans: H&M

bangs, yes or no?

Friday, May 25, 2012

I have a love/hate relationship with bangs (sorry aussies, I mean a fringe). I love the way they look on other people, so I want them too. But when I have bangs, they drive me nuts, never quite looking how I want them to. It also doesn't help that my hair is multi-coloured; that big blond streak in the front is natural and makes any attempt at a fringe look kind of funny.

And yet, I want a fringe again. I wear my hair up a lot and it gets pretty boring. I like how a fringe can make even a messy bun look cute. What say you?

Minxy Vintage and a tale of a blue dress

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Last week when I saw that Kelly Doust's newest book was out, I excitedly grabbed a copy and ran home to start poring over its pages. It's a stunning book, full of gorgeous photos from Kelly Doust's seemingly endless collection of vintage. But more than that, it's chock-a-block filled with useful tips and tricks on how to buy, wear, and customise vintage.

Yesterday I popped into a local vintage shop with my friend, a shop where everything is pretty pricey (damn you Mad Men for making 50's dresses so unaffordable!). But then I found this dress hiding in a bin, on sale for $10 because it had a couple of stains. Normally I would've just passed over it thinking it would be too much of a pain to deal with. But not this week, not with Kelly Doust's words of wisdom in my head!

Instead I fished $10 out of my wallet fast as I could and brought my new blue dress home to clean. And voila, stains almost all gone this is going to be an awesome dress for summer! There's one slightly stubborn mark on the front (that my friend insists she couldn't see until I pointed it out) which I may cover with a flower or a brooch.
